I was married to a combat vet (four tours in Vietnam). We'd be out, and see some man at the grocery store with military bearing, and with those really deep set lines in his face, and my husband would comment, there's a man who has had to send people to their death more than once.
One time he mused offhand that he had grown up on the reservation where the weather, the terrain, the wildlife and sometimes other people were trying to kill you, went from there to Vietnam for more of the same plus guns, bombs, and disease, survived all that, and came back to the States where, as he put it, "people are afraid of a cat."
I try to live up to the grace he carried about it all.
