"When looking for a needle in a haystack, your relative chance of success correlates to the size of the magnet you use." Jono, thanks for brightening up my inbox every week. Keep up the good work.

The detail that a positive result's meaning depends on where you look, not only on the test, is the part I find hardest to keep in mind. The same test applied to a smaller, more suspicious haystack, say people who already have symptoms, returns positives that are far more often needles. So your closing question may be the most useful one before any test: how rare is the thing here, in this pile? And for whoever holds a false alert, it feels like a needle until the second test says otherwise.
